About Shared Yacht Ownership
Scroll for moreA clear guide to how yacht sharing works, how to buy a share and how to sell one.
Yacht sharing – also known as fractional yacht ownership – is one of the smartest and most cost‑effective ways to own a yacht. Instead of one person carrying all the cost and responsibility, a small group of owners share the boat, the running costs, and the sailing time. You own a real share of the yacht, not a timeshare, and the group manages the boat together.
What Yacht Sharing Is (and Why It Works)
Most people who choose yacht sharing want a well‑equipped, family‑friendly cruiser that’s easy to handle and affordable to run. Sharing makes this possible:
- Lower upfront cost for a bigger or newer yacht
- Shared running costs (mooring, insurance, servicing, maintenance)
- Better use of the boat – less time sitting idle
- Flexible cruising – especially in places like Greece or Spain
- Upgrades become affordable, improving comfort and safety
Most UK groups divide yachts into quarters, thirds, or halves. Overseas, quarters and fifths are common. Sailing time is allocated fairly, based on share size and the local season.
A good share group doesn’t require close friendship – just respect, communication, and a practical, business‑like approach to caring for the boat.
How to Buy a Yacht Share
Buying a share is as much about the people as the boat. Shared ownership works best when owners have compatible expectations and a flexible approach.
- Register your interest
Once you have found a boat share on our site that suits you, you contact Yacht Fractions with your details and a summary of your sailing experience by completing our Buyer Enquiry Form.
- We notify the seller
We pass on your background and any specific needs (for example, school holiday availability).
- Initial contact and viewing
You speak with the seller and, if the yacht is in the UK, usually arrange a viewing. For overseas yachts, many shares are sold without a viewing.
We recommend:
- Talking to the other owners
- Considering a survey or inspection, although for most share sales, this is rare
If you’d like to go ahead, just let us know. We’ll speak with both you and the seller to agree on the terms. A 10% deposit is normally paid to secure the sale.
- Conditions before proceeding
Before we complete a sale, the following must be confirmed:
- Acceptance by the other owners
- Insurance approval for you as a skipper
- A commitment to enter into the Owners’ Agreement
Share agreements usually give owners the right to reject a buyer, but only on reasonable grounds, for example, if the buyer doesn’t have enough experience or would significantly change the way the group works.
- Final steps and completion
Once the deal is agreed:
- Yacht Fractions prepares the Bill of Sale
- Both parties sign
- Funds are transferred
- You receive your copy of the Bill of Sale and join the syndicate
Shared ownership is almost always successful when expectations are clear and the agreement is followed.
How to Sell Your Yacht Share
Yacht Fractions markets your share until it sells – sometimes very quickly, sometimes longer.
What makes a share sell quickly?
- The right boat
- In the right location
- At the right price
What we need from you
If we’ve sold shares in your boat before, just let us know, and we’ll send you a link to the previous listing. We can then work with you to bring everything up to date.
If we haven’t sold a share in the boat before, you should complete the “Sell Shares” form on our site. In this form, you provide:
- Your contact details
- Full details of the boat
- Mooring location
- Share size
- Asking price
- Annual running costs
- A good set of photos
You should also provide us with proof of ownership, VAT status, and a copy of the share agreement.
It’s important to tell the other owners you’re selling — many agreements give them first refusal at market value.
With all that information, we prepare the listing, get your approval, and publish it.
When a buyer enquires
We contact you and provide the enquirer’s details so you can make contact directly. Some enquiries don’t progress; that’s normal, but we follow up where helpful.
Agreeing on the deal
The sale includes:
- Final price
- Completion date
- Any conditions (owner approval, insurance, agreement acceptance)
If completion is delayed, we issue a Sale Agreement with a 10% deposit (minimum £1,000).

- Predictable running costs

- Straightforward resale
- A fair, transparent system
Many owners find they sail more with a share than when they owned a whole boat, because sailing time is planned and allocated.
